The Paper Body Collective: A Sacred Feminine Semiotics for South African women’s contemporary visual performance.
The Paper Body Collective promotes the development of women’s Visual Performance and Puppetry in Southern Africa through multidisciplinary creative projects, sacred theatre and performance, dynamic collaborations, developmental workshops, talks, research and training. The focus of the company's puppetry is to explore women’s sexual and spiritual emergence(y) through artistic practice seeking pathways to personal and community empowerment and transformation. The PBC's unique performance techniques, termed Magic Um’lingo have developed over a period of twelve years of performance research. This intuitive and embodied approach to puppetry combines multiple puppetry techniques (including full body latex puppetry, giant paper puppetry, shadow puppetry and mask) in a multicultural environment of bodies, site, sound and multimedia.
