RROMANI SOUL traces the true origin of the Rroma people. Through rituals, song and dance we follow emblematic figure and "Queen of the Gypsies" Esma Redzepova to Macedonia, south of France and finally to India. The film reveals for the first time ever that the true and unique origin of the Rroma is Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, India. Elle fut la première à chanter en langue romani et est devenue une ambassadrice de ce peuple éclaté. C’est ainsi qu’aujourd’hui elle représente cette minorité au Conseil municipal de Skopje, sa vile natale. Le peuple rrom a su garder une culture propre au cours d’un exil millénaire. C’est ce que nous découvrons en suivant Esma Redzepova dans différentes célébrations : en Macédoine, aux Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, et enfin en Inde, et plus précisément à Kannauj, dans l’Uttar Pradesh, ville dont tous les Roms sont originaires comme le révèle pour la première fois le linguiste Marcel Courthiade. Là, on le voit s’installer pour une interview clairement mise en scène puisqu’il demande à son interlocuteur comment il doit se placer par rapport à la caméra... À la première question “ Qui es-tu ? ” Jodorowsky répond d’abord par un soupir d’exaspération puis cite la réponse du Boddi Dharma à la même interrogation de l’Empereur de Chine : “Je ne sais pas ! ”. puis poursuit “... seulement quand on est mort on peut savoir qui on est. Croire savoir qui on est c’est placer un arrêt à l’intérieur de soi.” à ce jeu d’interrogation réflexives, l’intervieweur-réalisateur se trouvera finalement de l’autre côté de la caméra-miroir se livrant alors totalement lui-même, révélant son drame personnel sous nous yeux, entrant dans une mise en scène généalogique selon les méthodes jodorowskiennes, jusqu’à l’acte psycho-magique libérateur qui conclut ce film dans une séquence particulièrement émouvante et qui prend littéralement à la gorge.
